Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood.

Some Common Mental Health Issues Among Teens Include

  • Feeling very sad or withdrawn
  • Intense worries or fears that get in the way of daily activities
  • Drastic changes in mood, behavior, personality or sleeping habits.
  • Repeatedly using drugs or alcohol
  • Extreme difficulty in concentrating or staying still
  • Severe out of control, risk-taking behaviors
  • Not eating, throwing up or using medications to lose weight, significant weight loss or gain.

How to talk about mental health with your teen

  • Communicate in a straightforward manner.
  • Speak at a level that is appropriate to your teen’s age and development.
  • Discuss the topic when your teen feels safe and comfortable.
  • Watch for reactions during the discussion and slow down or back up if your teen becomes confused or looks upset
  • Listen openly and let your teen tell you about his or her feelings and worries

Ideas on starting conversations about mental health

Can you tell me more about what is happening? How are you feeling?
  • Have you had feelings like this in the past?
  • Sometimes you need to talk to an adult to talk about this. I’m here to listen. How can I help you feel better?
  • Do you feel like you want to talk to someone else about your problem?
  • I’m worried about your safety. Can you tell me if you have thoughts about harming yourself or others?
