Battle of the Books at North Hollywood High School

Please join us for our annual high school reading quiz competition in Spring of 2024, scheduled for May 5th (tentatively).

The reading list for this year includes an enticing mix of contemporary young adult literature.  Find the books at your school media lab (room 002)or public library, or wherever you like to get your books.  Start right away!

Battle of the Books at North Hollywood High School is a friendly quiz competition between a few local high schools, with teams of 3-4 answering questions about books from a common reading list.  The students of the NHHS Book Club, now sponsored by Ms. Trejo, started the competition a few years ago.  This year we hope to resume having a live-in person competition, hosted at a local high school. The 2023-24 competition is planned for May of 2024.  All NHHS students are welcome to participate by reading a few of the books from the list and joining a team.  (3 or 4 makes a team.)  If you need help forming a team, see Ms. Trejo or Mr. Hamrick.  The Book Club meets on Thursdays during lunch in Ms. Trejo's room: NB73.

The library will have multiple copies available for all of the books on the list.  Or you can try your local public library or bookseller. See Mr. Hamrick in the library for more details and to get your books.

Fifteen Titles for the 2023-24 School Year

The culminating activity for Battle of the Books is a quiz competition, but any student is welcome to read from the list and have fun discussions with peers about the books.  If you don't have plans to be on a team or are not in the book club, that's fine.  However, if you read several of the titles, a team may ask for you to join.  Ideally, a team of 3 or 4 will divide the list so that the group will have read all 15 titles.  Sometimes, a team is made up of readers who are less organized, and that's OK too.

This year, all of the books are in the category of Young Adult Fiction.  Some are by local authors and are current contenders for the prestigious California Yound Readers Medal.  Readers of the CYRM titles will be eligible to vote for a favorite author to win that award.

The battle questions are written so that the answer is always the title and author of one of the books.  Here is an example of what the questions are like:

Question: In which book do a bear and a pig help a donkey get a house?

Answer:  The House at Pooh Corner by A. A. Milne  ( < Just an example, not one of our selections for this year.)
